For example, when we say, His tears are right at the edge of his eyes, we create an image of someone on the verge of crying, reflecting vulnerability and sensitivity. Similarly, when we describe individuals who quickly lose their temper, we say, He boils over very soon, indicating that he gets angry in no time.

In moments of heightened anxiety, we might say, His heart jumped into his mouth, illustrating the overwhelming sensation of fear or apprehension that can cause one to feel as if his heart has leaped from its comfortable place. On the other hand, when someone is fraught with worry or sorrow, we describe them as having a heart boiling like vinegar, evoking a potent image of turmoil and restlessness, as if their emotions are simmering just below the surface, ready to erupt. These proverbs beautifully encapsulate the depth of human experience in a way that resonates with our shared feelings and insights.

From Job and Jerjis (a prophet) to Zuleikha and Qarun, these narratives are firmly rooted in our culture, allowing us to invoke them in straightforward and relatable ways whenever needed.

For example, when discussing patience and endurance, the phrase the patience of Job often comes to mind. When we want to commend someone who has faced life’s challenges without complaint, we usually say, they have the patience of Job.

Zuleikha, renowned for her deep, passionate love for Prophet Joseph, has come to symbolize profound sorrow and yearning in our culture. It appears she has taken on the burden of all that has been shattered—from broken hearts to tattered garments. With a bittersweet smile, we often say Ah, this is another thing for Zuleikha’s liver!

Great wealth is often associated with the story of Qarun’s treasure. For Iranians, even the fortunes of Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos pale compared to Qarun’s! He has become the definitive symbol of wealth and abundance in our shared memory, serving as the standard against which all significant fortunes are measured. Moreover, we often add that Qarun lost everything because of his arrogance, so what can we say about Elon Musk?

Or, when someone makes a careless, hasty decision to get themselves out of trouble, we say: “Of all the prophets, they picked George (Jerjis)!”
